Around the Sun Belt

Conference season begins for some this week as the race for a Sun Belt title starts to heat up. So what have the other seven teams done to this point? We've got you covered

Arkansas State

Record: 1-1

The Red Wolves lost to SEC's Auburn last week 38-9 and blew out Arkansas-Pine Bluff 62-11 opening weekend. Their 9th in the nation in rushing, averaging 329.5 yards per game. They kickoff their conference schedule Thursday on a short week against Troy. The game will be broadcast on ESPNU and WatchESPN.

Georgia State

Record: 0-2

Predicted to finish last in the Sun Belt, no one thought Georgia State would be this bad. They've lost to 2 FCS opponents - Samford and Chattanooga 31-21 and 42-14, respectively. It's bad enough losing to one FCS team, but two? The Panthers could be slated for a winless season.

UL Lafayette

Record: 0-2

Unlike the Panthers, the Ragin' Cajuns have had a real tough schedule to start out, with losses to SEC's Arkansas and Big 12's Kansas St. Lafayette wasn't blown out in either contest and has two easy games against Nichols St. and Akron before meeting up with the Bobcats to start conference play. Their defense has allowed 41 PPG, 115th in the nation.

UL Monroe

Record: 1-1

The Warhawks easily took care of Grambling St. 48-10 last week after getting blanked in Norman 34-0 against the Sooners. The Warhawks still have two more tests against BCS automatic qualifying conferences - @ Wake Forest and @ Baylor.

South Alabama

Record: 1-1

The Jaguars have also been a victim of the FCS bug, falling to Southern Utah 22-21 opening weekend but bounched back to defeat Conference-USA's Tulane 41-39 in a shootout last week. In that game, the Jaguars racked up over 150 yards both on the ground and through the air. They start conference play against Western Kentucky this Saturday on ESPN3.

Did you know?

Texas State is 13th in the nation, giving up just 9.0 points per game in their first two outings, but are 102nd in passing yards per game, 150.0.

Record: 2-0

The Trojans are racking up the points thus far in 2013, 10th in the nation averaging 50 points per game. The 66 against Savannah St. helped but their 34-31 overtime win over UAB was even more impressive. The Trojans and Red Wolves conference battle Thursday gets conference play off to a great start.

Western Kentucky

Record: 1-1

A 1-1 record isn't bad, but a 1-1 record against two teams from the SEC is more than acceptable. Western Kentucky beat in-state rival Kentucky for the second straight time but were a victim to a slow start in Tennessee. Their next two games against South Alabama and Morgan St. should show the defenses true colors.
